WINNSBORO – Down 5-2 after an inning of play, Fairfield Central could not plate enough runs to overcome the deficit against Wilson High School last Friday and took a 8-4 loss.
The Griffins got on the board first in the top of the first with a dinger by Blake Gambrell. Jonathan Warren followed with a walk, and Tydarion Grier (in as courtesy runner for Warren) scored the Griffins’ second run off of a Cialen Gadson line drive single to left. The frame ended on a Fairfield strikeout.
Rylan Woodard took the mound for Fairfield. With a lead-off out, Keonte Dials reached base on a Griffin error, then a walk put runners on first and second for Wilson. A single loaded the bases, then Wilson evened the score at 2 with a line-drive double to left.
With two runners in scoring position and only one out, Woodard struck out the Wilson batter. Woodard walked the next batter to load the bases. A Tiger single scored two, and Wilson led 4-2. The Tigers added one more run on a wild pitch before the Griffins got out of the inning.
With no offensive action in the top of the inning, Fairfield headed to the field in the bottom of the second trailing 5-2. A Wilson single and hit batter put runners on first and second, then a double from Rondell Law put Wilson up 6-2.
Fairfield responded with a run in the top of the third. Gambrell started things off with a single to left, then stole second before scoring on a double by Adam Gonzalez. A sacrifice bunt by Gadson set Gonzalez up to score on a catcher error two batters later before a strikeout ended the rally.
Down 4-6 with lots of baseball left, Fairfield looked to be closing the gap. K Mobley took the mound in the bottom of the third for Fairfield and walked the leadoff batter. A longball to left added the final two runs of the night.
Woodard took the loss for Fairfield. He faced 13 batters and allowed five hits and 2 earned runs. Woodard walked two and struck out one. Mobley worked 2.2 innings. He struck out four, walked one, and allowed two hits and two runs.
Gambrell led Fairfield at the plate with 2 hits and an RBI. Gonzalez and Gadson also had a run batted in each.
The Griffins were scheduled to host Keenan on Wednesday, but scores were not available at press time.
