PELION – Fairfield Central snagged a handful of first place finishes against Abbeville, Camden, Palmetto Athletic Club, Pelion and Swansea last Wednesday at Pelion High School.
Sharmelle Holmes dominated the girls 100, 200 and 400 meter dash finals, pulling first place finishes in all three events. Holmes had a time of 12.45 in the 100 meter, 25.72 in the 200 meter, and 58.97 in the 400 meter finals, all personal records for her, according to MileSplit SC.
Holmes wasn’t the only top finisher for the Griffin girls. Tamerra English placed first in the Javelin finals at 63-1 (also a personal best), and Ericka Kelly placed first in shot put at 30-9.
Natalia Gray placed second in long jump at 14-3.25, Kelly placed second in discus at 74-3 and Tanisha English placed second in javelin at 57-8.
Other top-five finishers for Fairfield’s girls:
- 4×100 Relay Team (2nd place, 51.73)
- Natalia Gray: 100m dash (3rd place, 13.09)
- SaKira Hayes: 800m run (4th place, 3:00.15), 1600m run (4th place, 6:27.70, PR), 3200m run (4th place, 16:14.00)
- Tanisha English: high jump (5th place, 4-0)
The Griffin boys also had multiple top finishes.
Joshua Mosley placed first in the 800 meter, 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs with times of 2:12.35, 4:48.71 and 10:50.22. Mosley’s 800 meter time was a new personal record.
Stephon Gadsden and Gerald Roach also had first place finishes that were personal bests. Gadsden placed first in long jump at 20-2 and Roach in shot put at 38-9.5.
Stepheno Gadsden pulled a second place finish in long jump at 19-4.75.

- Stephon Gadsden: 100m dash (3rd place, 11.35)
- Jamie Brown: 200m dash (3rd place, 24.97)
- 4×400 Relay Team (3rd place, 4.11.38)
- 4×800 Relay Team (3rd place, 11:34.14)
- Tydarion Grier: 100m dash (4th place, 11.50); long jump (5th place, 18-4)
- Hank White: 3200m run (4th place, 13:29.16)
- Sidney Wilson: 3200m run (5th place, 13:30.72)
Fairfield Central was scheduled to compete in the SC High School League’s Region 4-3A Championships on Wednesday, but scores were not available at press time.
State qualifying meets will be held May 14 and 15; State Finals are scheduled for May 21-22.
