WINNSBORO – As expected, the crowd for the annual Jenni Sharpe Memorial 5K was even smaller than last year. The run, in its fifth year, funds college scholarships to students in Fairfield County in memory of Fairfield native Jenni Caldwell Sharpe as a way to continue her legacy of kindness and giving.
After a series of fundraisers for Sharpe by Fairfield Central and Richard Winn students during her battle with cervical cancer in 2015, she wrote in her blog, “We are so proud to call Fairfield County home. This community is full of giving, kind-hearted, and caring Christians that know how to come together in the time of need.” She then described how her family was anxious to repay the support she received. It’s through the community’s support for the scholarship that her family is able to do so.
In the past four years, the scholarship fund has given 18 scholarships to graduating seniors in the county totaling $28,000. And while this year’s crowd was smaller than last, the intentions were mighty. Sharpe’s family expects to be able to fund multiple scholarships again to this year.
Another event to support the scholarship fund is scheduled for April 17 – a big turkey contest with a $400 grand prize. To register to participate in the big turkey contest, click here.
