LAURENS – Despite a first quarter battle in Laurens on Tuesday, the Richard Winn girls managed to blow out the Crusaders with a 51-34 final.
The Eagle offense, led by seniors Taylor Spires and Meredith Pope, had a slow start in the early goings of Tuesday’s game. Laurens held the normally potent duo to only six points in the first. The teams were tied at nine after one quarter of play.
Pope sprang into action in the second, picking up eight of her 18 points on the night, and the Eagles led 27-14 at the intermission.
The Eagles took an even more commanding lead in the third, and headed into the final quarter up 20 points.
The Eagle boys left Laurens with different results, falling 53-35 to the Crusaders. With some key senior players out to injury, the Eagles had a sophomore and two freshman in the starting lineup.
Richard Winn fell behind early and found themselves at the wrong end of a 17-6 first quarter score. Despite a more even second quarter, the deficit grew as the game progressed.
Freshman Miller Stuck led Eagle scorers with 12 points.
The Eagle boys will host Anderson Christian on Friday at 6 p.m. Both teams will travel to Wardlaw on Monday and are set to host senior night against W.W. King in Winnsboro on Tuesday.
