WINNSBORO – When the Catawba Ridge Copperheads rolled into Winnsboro last Friday to face off with Fairfield Central, both schools were hungry for region wins.
Having fallen to Camden (55-25) and Keenan (70-40) in their first taste of region action, the Lady Griffins were prepared for redemption and found it in the form of a close 41-38 win.
Jamaria Sampson put up 14 points and four assists to lead the Griffins’ offensive efforts. Tahalia Collier added 11 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Senior Cristin Gray tallied nine points, eleven rebounds and three blocks in the win.
The Griffin and Copperhead boys’ teams also battled for their first region wins of the season, and this time Catawba Ridge came out on top.
The Copperheads took down Fairfield in a tight 48-48 contest. Sintell Quattlebaum led Fairfield with 13 points, followed by Adrien Jackson with 12.
Fairfield boys played in the MLK Holiday Basketball Showcase at York High School on Monday. Both Charlie Cason Jr. (13) and Jackson (10) put up double digits in the contest, but Fort Mill outlasted Fairfield for the 69-52 win.
The Griffins played Catawba Ridge on Wednesday, but scores were not available at press time.
Fairfield will host familiar rival Chester on Friday for their first meeting of the season. Chester is winless in the region with losses to Indian Land (74-72), Keenan (58-53) and Camden (60-39).
