FORT MILL – Westwood basketball jumped right back into the swing of things last week in the Milltown Basketball Classic at Fort Mill High School.
The Redhawks faced Nation Ford first in the three-day tournament. Westwood took an early 15-8 lead in the first. Despite a big second quarter by the Falcons, Westwood took a 30-24 lead at halftime. The Redhawks outscored Nation Ford in the third 16-6 to put some distance and finish the game with a 63-43 final.
Nyah Leveretter put up 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the win over the Falcons. Malayziah Etheredge scored twelve, Ja’Mari Frederick and Jessica Woods scored 10 each.
The Redhawks faced Fort Mill in day two of tournament action. After jumping out to an early 12-3 lead in the first, Westwood powered past the Yellowjackets for a 55-37 win.
Etheredge led the Redhawks with 13 points. Woods scored 12. Jala Wade put up 9 points and added 10 rebounds. A’Laya Scott added nine points and 11 rebounds.
Day three did not prove to be much more of a challenge for Westwood as they doubled Catawba Ridge 18-9 after one quarter of play. A 33-19 lead at halftime turned into a 53-42 final score as the Redhawks went 3-0 to take top honors at the tournament.
Westwood officially tipped off the season on Tuesday with a big win over Columbia High School. With five players scoring double digits, the Redhawks blasted the Capitals to the tune of 92-17. Woods led the Redhawks with 19 points, followed by Etheredge with 16, Imani Simon with 12, Leveretter with 11 and Frederick with 10.
Westwood opens home action Friday against Spring Valley at 6 p.m. and will play host to Fairfield Central on Tuesday.
FORT MILL – Westwood basketball got in an early-season flex last week at the Milltown Basketball Classic at Nation Ford High School.
The Redhawks opened tournament action against Nation Ford High School on Monday. Westwood put up 15 in each of the first two quarters to take a 30-24 lead at half. After a big third quarter put them ahead 46-30, the Redhawks finished the Falcons with a 63-43 final.
Ahmon Green led the Redhawks with 17 points, all scored in the second half, and Bre’on Lewis put up 11.
Westwood’s second victim came in the form of Catawba Ridge Copperheads on day two of the Milltown Classic. The 70-53 win pitted Westwood against Fort Mill for the tournament championship.
Led by Mequaje McDaniels with 17 points, the Redhawks put Fort Mill away 48-43 to claim the Milltown Classic Championship. Ty Turner put up 14 in the win and Mike Peay added 9.
Westwood hit the road on Tuesday for their first taste of regular-season action against Columbia High School and picked up their first win with a 73-59 final.
The Redhawks will open their home schedule with Spring Valley on Friday and host Fairfield Central on Tuesday. Both games are set to start at 7:30 p.m. at The Castle.
