WINNSBORO – The Griffins got the new season underway with two wins under their belts.
Fairfield faced Great Falls last Wednesday in their season opener and blasted the Red Devils to the tune of 63-2.
Nine of the eleven Griffins scored in the win. Madisen Belton shot 64% to lead the Griffins offensively with 14 points. Belton added 10 steals, five assists two rebounds and a block in the contest. Tahalia Collier and Deasia Feaster put up ten points each. Jamaria Sampson added nine points. Cristin Gray and Mikaela Gaines pulled down 6 rebounds and two steals each.
Newberry High School fell victim to the Lady G’s next. Fairfield hosted the Bulldogs last Friday to wrap up their first week of regular season. Sampson put up 13 points in the 62-36 win over the Bulldogs. Zariah Rice and Gray added twelve each. Gray tallied seven rebounds, seven steals and three blocked shots. Feaster also was credited with seven rebounds and a block.
Fairfield found a tough adversary in Blythewood 4A powerhouse Westwood High School on Tuesday. The Redhawks, who currently sit 6-0 on the season, held the Griffins almost scoreless in the first as they took an early 20-1 lead. By halftime, Fairfield trailed 43-10. The second half offensive numbers were no better, but the Griffins held Westwood to 17 points in the 60-20 loss. Westwood head coach Gregory Bauldrick picked up his 100th career victory in the win over Fairfield.
Fairfield hosted White Knoll on Wednesday, but scores were not available at press time. The Griffins will travel to Newberry for a Friday night matchup before returning home to host Westwood on Dec. 16.
