GREENWOOD – Fairfield Central Cross Country has one run left, and it’s a big one. Per the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) rules, the top 20 finishing teams at the Upper State Qualifiers will advance to the State meet, and both Griffin boys and girls teams pulled a top-20 finish in Greenwood last Saturday.
Fairfield boys finished in the eight spot with an average time of 18:09, over a minute out from the top spot (17:46 average). Senior Sammie Robinson was the first Griffin finisher with a time of 17:47.40 for a 22nd overall finish. Malik Coleman (17:51.00) and Joshua Mosley (17:54.30) followed closely with 23rd and 27th place finishes. Malik Beaver finished 35th with a time of 18:16.40 and Luke Downs rounded out the Griffins’ score at 18:55.90. Giacomo Rutigliano finished with a time of 19:17.80 and Gabriel Mosley finished at 19:44.20.
The Griffin girls finished in 15th place with a 25:57 average time. Ashanti Thompson led Fairfield runners in 59th place with a time of 23:23.40. Nia Lemon (23.52.20), Trenell Boyd (26:31.70), Kensley Green (26:46.40) and Elena Frick (29:14.90) rounded out the Griffin scores.
The Griffins head to the Carolina Cup Facility in Camden on Saturday for the SCHSL State Championships. The boys will run at 9:35 a.m. and girls at 11:20 a.m. Admission is $8 per car.
