YORK – The Westwood Redhawks jumped out to a quick 16-0 lead under the Friday night lights at York High School. The Cougars answered back in the third quarter with a 15-0 run, but the Redhawks held on in overtime for their first conference win of the season.
Westwood struck hard in the first with a big first quarter by Ahmon Green. Green put the Redhawks on the board with a two-yard rush and again a few minutes later from the 35. Westwood converted both two-point attempts to take the 16-0 lead with 3:48 left in the first.
The Cougars cut into the lead by seven before the end of the first. Defenses regrouped for the second quarter and both teams were held scoreless. The score stood at 16-7 for the half.
York attacked early in the third with a 49-yard run by Frank Thompson and a good PAT to train 16-14. Thompson struck again from nine yards out, and a two-point conversion put the Cougars up 22- 16.
Westwood managed to hold York scoreless in the fourth and tie the game at 22. With three seconds left in regulation, York lined up for a field goal to win the game, but the Redhawks blocked the kick to send the game into overtime.
The Redhawks had the ball first in overtime and took a 28-22 lead on the first play from a seven-yard scamper by sophomore Jullian Milligan. The two point conversion failed, but Westwood’s defense held York scoreless to clinch the overtime win and improve to 5-2 overall, 1-1 in region play.
Westwood will face Ridge View on Friday at the Castle. The Blazers are 2-0 in region action with wins over York and Richland Northeast. Kickoff is set for 7:30.
