WINNSBORO – The Richard Winn Eagles cruised to their fourth straight win on Friday as they defeated the King Academy Knights by a score of 63-6. The Eagles move to 8-1 on the season. King cut into the Eagles’ early lead, making it 14-6 with 4:04 to play in the opening quarter, but the Eagles returned the impending kickoff and scored the final 49 points of the contest.
The Eagles had seven offensive possessions in the contest and scored touchdowns on each possession, plus they added two special teams’ touchdowns.
After forcing a three-and-out by the Knights, Richard Winn got a 17-yard return on the punt, setting them up with a first down at their own 35. Two plays later the Eagles were in the end zone following 24-yard pass from Dru Caldwell to Hudson Wade. The Eagles next score would also come on a two-play drive; this time they went 53 yards. Joey Banister scored the touchdown on the ground from 27 yards out to put the Eagles up 14-0.
King put together its only touchdown drive on its next series as the Knights went nine plays and 72 yards for the score. The Knights had one run for a 36 yards, and the touchdown came on a 21-yard pass. The two-point conversion run was no good and the score was 14-6.
Marshall Gibbons returned the ensuing kickoff for a 60-yard touchdown, and John Russell returned a blocked punt for a 28-yard touchdown to put the Eagles ahead 28-6 before Richard Winn even had another offensive series.
Three of the final five touchdowns by Richard Winn were touchdown runs by Brandon Miller. Miller had scoring runs of 35, 18 and 45 yards. Caldwell also had a two-yard scoring pass to Gavin Douglas, his second touchdown toss of the night and Bryan King had a seven-yard scoring run, the final scoring play of the game.
Miller rushed for 163 yards and three scores on just seven carries. The Eagles rushed for 283 yards on 21 rushing attempts on the evening. They also had seven passing plays in the game for 64 yards. Richard Winn scored seven offensive touchdowns in the game on 28 total offensive plays for one score every four snaps.
The Eagles hit the road for their final regular season game at Wardlaw Academy. Richard Winn could still finish anywhere between first, second or third in the region standings, depending on Friday’s results.
Several Eagles have put together solid seasons through the first nine games. Miller leads the team on both sides of the ball as he has rushed 125 times for 1,691 yards and 27 scores. He also has four catches for 55 yards and one score, and, on the defensive side of the ball, he has 84 tackles. Caldwell leads the way at quarterback with 53 passing completions in 64 attempts for 615 yards and 14 touchdowns, while Hudson Wade has caught 17 passes for 309 yards and 10 touchdowns.
