Griffins chart the course

LANCASTER – Last week was a busy one for Fairfield Central Cross Country. After a weekend showing in the Lake Murray Invitational, the Griffins took to Lancaster on Tuesday for a 5-team meet with Hawthorn Christian, Indian Land, Lancaster and Lewisville.

The boys team finished second with a 19:19.20 average time. Of the 57 runners, five Griffins finished in the top ten. Sammie Robinson finished in the second spot overall, first for the Griffins, with a time of 18:22.00. Malik Beaver placed fifth at 18.56.00. Malik Coleman and Joshua Mosley followed in sixth and ninth places at 19:05 and 19:20. Luke Downs rounded out the top ten overall scorers in the 10th spot at 20:53.

Nia Lemon led the Griffin girls and finished in seventh place overall at 25:13. Trenell Boyd followed in 16th place at 30:40.

Both teams traveled to Pelion the next day for the Pelion Invitational. Of the 22 boys teams competing, Fairfield Central’s boys found themselves in the top again. The Griffins finished in fifth place. Among the four finishers above them were 5A powerhouses Lexington, Chapin and Dutch Fork.

Robinson again finished first for the Griffins, in sixth place overall, with a time of 18:31.78. Coleman followed closely at 18:44.87 in the 12th spot, and Mosley finished next in 28 at 19:47.10.

The Griffin girls finished 13th out of 16 teams. Lemon led the Griffins in 26th place with a 25:14.15 finish, followed by Boyd at 28.31.32.

Fairfield wrapped up the busy week on Saturday at the Blythewood Invitational. Beaver topped Griffin runners this time with a third place overall finish at 18:33.70 with a host of Griffins on his heels. Robinson finished fourth at 18:36.7, Coleman fifth at 18:45.9, Mosley eighth at 19:04.7 and Downs in ninth at 19:36.80. Gabriel Mosley finished at 20:55.4 in 17th place and Giacomo Rutigliano in 18th at 21:09.50.

Lemon again crossed the finish line first for the Griffin girls. She finished ninth place overall at 22:17.8. Boyd finished at 25:22.40. Kensley Green had a 29:04.80 finish, followed by Alexus Burbage and Christian Gray. 

The Griffins were back in action on Tuesday at Chester, but scores were not available at press time.

Fairfield will compete in the Wendy’s Invitational this Saturday in Charlotte.
