WINNSBORO – Richard Winn Volleyball has found the groove and moves into second in region standings after defeating Cambridge Academy on Tuesday.
Richard Winn took an early match lead with a tight 26-24 game one win over the Cougars. Cambridge returned to even the match with a 25-22 win in game two, but the Eagles rebounded for 25-22 and 25-19 wins to clinch the victory.
Junior Sydney Boulware led the Eagles with 8 kills in 12 attempts. Senior Riley Simpson added six kills, while Meredith Pope notched four and Taylor Spires tallied three.
The Eagles had a big night from the service line. Boulware served five aces. Spires, Mikaela Miller and Anna Taylor Mathias each had four aces.
The region win comes on the heels of a 3-1 rout of Wardlaw Academy. Richard Winn took games one and two, 25-22 and 27-25, in Johnston last Thursday to take a 2-0 lead. Wardlaw squeaked out a 29-27 win in game three, but the Eagles remained steady and took the match with a game four 25-22 win.
Simpson and Boulware again lead the field in kills with nine and eight respectively. Spires added six and Pope three. Mathias recorded nine services aces and Spires had five. Miller logged nine digs.
Wardlaw and Cambridge both beat Richard Winn early in the season.
Four matches remain for the Eagles in regular season action, three of them conference play. Richard Winn will face region foe Laurens Academy for the first time this season at home on Oct. 10. They will host Ben Lippen School on Oct. 14 for Senior Night before traveling to Laurens on Oct. 15 and will wrap up regular season play at King Academy on Oct. 17.
Laurens split wins with King Academy and lost two matches to region leader Newberry, but they defeated Wardlaw in both meetings this season. Richard Winn split wins with Newberry and Wardlaw and defeated King 3-1 in their first meeting of the season.
The Eagles will host the Region Tournament on Oct. 19 and will await seeding for the State Tournament beginning Oct. 25.
