NEWBERRY – After a 1-0 start in the region with a win over Anderson Christian, Richard Winn took to Newberry Academy on Sept. 9 for the Battle of the Eagles. Newberry, also 1-0 in region play, bested the Eagles in a tight 3-1 match.
Newberry took game 1 by a 25-15 margin. Richard Winn managed to recover in game two, but lost 25-20 to give Newberry the 2-0 advantage heading into game 3.
The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead under the service of Anna Taylor Mathias. Newberry jumped ahead 16-12 after one time through the rotation, but the Eagles battled back to take a 19-18 lead under service of sophomore Mikaela Miller. Senior Riley Simpson served next for Richard Winn and all but sealed the deal with a 24-20 lead to set the Eagles up to take the 25-20 win in game 3.
Newberry recovered in game four with a 26-24 win to take the match.
Junior Sydney Boulware led the Eagles with 12 kills. Meredith Pope and Taylor Spires each tallied five. Spires added two aces and a block.
Newberry Academy (6-5, 4-0) currently stands atop the conference with wins over the Eagles, Anderson Christian, Cambridge Academy and Laurens Academy. After almost two weeks off, Richard Winn returns to action to face Anderson Christian on Sept. 19 in Anderson. They will host King Academy on Sept. 24 and travel to Cambridge on Sept. 26 for their next conference matchups.
