WINNSBORO – A couple of walks, two singles and a steal of home put Woodruff up 3-0 over Fairfield Central in the top of the first last Thursday, and the Wolverines never relented. The Griffins season ended with a 5-1 loss at home in the Class 3A elimination game.
The bottom of the first looked to be promising for the Griffins when Montavious Thompson singled and stole second, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning with Thompson stranded on base. The Griffins plated their only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Jones scored on an error by Woodruff catcher.
Though Griffin base running was solid with five stolen bases, Thompson’s first-inning single was the only hit of the game for Fairfield. Chazi Jones and Taylor Truesdale each managed a pair of steals after getting on with walks; Thompson snagged one.
Jacob McManus, who pitched a complete game for the Griffins, struck out eleven, allowed two hits and five runs in the 27 batters faced.
Woodruff starting pitcher BJ Bailey surrendered only one run on one hit and struck out fifteen over his complete game stretch.
The Griffins end their season with a 12-9 record.
