COLUMBIA – After a handful of losses in a row, Westwood softball found got mojo back last Thursday in the form of a 10-9 win over conference-foe Ridge View.
The Redhawks took an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. Emily Hedrick reach base to start the game on a leadoff single and advanced to second when Erin Wilson was hit by a pitch. Korenna Scott’s single to left field scored Hedrick, and Deneathia Dixon doubled on a hard ground ball to center, scoring Wilson. Olivia Burroughs followed with a line-drive single to center, scoring Scott and Dixon.
Marlena Perez seated two batters in the bottom of the frame to hold Ridge View scoreless heading into the second.
Westwood tacked on two more in the top of the second from a Burroughs RBI-triple and an RBI-single from Perez.
Ridge View answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning and tacked on four more before the fifth.
Tied at 6 headed into the fifth, Redhawk bats blazed again. Jade Brown reached on a leadoff single to right field and advanced to second when Abigail Rawl was hit by a pitch. A Taryn Jenkins single loaded the bases for Hedrick. Brown scored on a passed ball, then Hedrick singled, scoring Rawl. A hard ground ball hit by Dixon scores Jenkins and Hedrick, and the Redhawks end the frame with a 10-6 lead.
Ridge View added two in the bottom of the inning and managed another in the seventh, but the Redhawks held on for the win.
After a week out of action for Spring Break, the Redhawks will wrap up their regular season at North Central High School on April 22.
