GREENVILLE – First-year Westwood wrestling coach Bryan Bush led seven competitors into the 4A Upper State Finals over the weekend, and all seven advanced through day one of the competition. Team Captain Tyvion Shannon was the only Redhawk who punched a ticket to Friday’s 4A State Tournament, but Drake Lesher and Marcus Nedd were each a single victory away from the State Finals.
Shannon was a number-two seed in the 182-pound division and knocked off Palmetto’s Joseph Owens in the first round. Shannon lost a closely contested match-up in his second taste of action, and he needed a win over York’s Trevor Lucente to book his date to the State Tournament. Lucente had a win over Shannon from weeks prior, but after a reversal, Shannon scored a pin-fall victory.
Lesher competed at 195-pounds and finished the first day of competition with 1-1 record. It only took him a minute to record a pin-fall victory over Addison Stone from Travelers Rest in day-two action. Lesher needed win over South Pointe’s Justin Corbin to qualify, but Corbin walked away with the win.
Nedd lost his first match at 170 pounds to Eastside’s Bear Nelson, but followed up the loss with pin-falls over Maxim Grichenko from York and Bryson Head from Blue Ridge. Nedd had to outdo Lancaster’s Nygel Moore for a shot at an individual State Title, but Moore pinned Nedd in the third period.
Shannon’s fellow Captain Jordan Hightower won his first matchup at 145-pounds but an illness forced him out of day-two action.
