GREENWOOD – Richard Winn’s boys and girls took to Greenwood over the weekend to do battle in the SCISA Region 1A tournament. The Lady Eagles were bumped in heart-breaking semi-finals 31-30 loss against Newberry Academy. Taylor Spires earned All-Region and All-Tournament honors. She had 13 against Newberry Academy. Hannah Gibbons also earned All-Region distinctions.
The boys also met up with Newberry Academy in the semi-finals. Darius Boyd was on fire against Newberry, and he racked up 27 points in the Eagles’ 54-29 win. Hudson Wade had 17. The Newberry rout set up the Eagles for a region-title game against Laurens.
Laurens controlled most of the title game, but the Eagles made a furious charge at the end. Despite trailing by 12 at the start of the fourth quarter, Richard Winn pulled back within three, but time ran short on the comeback effort.
Boyd was named Region Player of the Year following the tournament proceedings, and earned All-Tournament honors. Hudson Wade and Will Carvalho were also named All-Region selections. Boys coach Nick Chaisson was named Region Co-Coach of the Year.
SCISA State Playoffs begin Friday, Feb. 15. The Lady Eagles, a no. 3 seed, will take on no. 2 Wardlaw Academy at 5 p.m. on Friday at Heathwood Hall in Columbia. The top-seeded boys will play no. 4 seed St. John’s Christian at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Heathwood Hall in Columbia.
