WINNSBORO – The Lady Griffins were on their home-court Tuesday night for a face-off against the Lugoff-Elgin Demons. Lugoff made a late run in the fourth quarter, but the Griffins defense smothered the opposition for the first three quarters and Fairfield got the job done 37-29. Cristin Gray was the leading scorer on the night with her 14-point performance.
After Gray scored the game’s opening bucket, turnovers and easy fast-break points helped the Griffins lead a 12-4 charge in the first quarter. Fairfield ratcheted up the defensive pressure in second quarter, and Lugoff’s sputtering offense had no answers.
The Demons only mustered up three points in the second, but the Griffins offense was not able to take advantage and pad their lead. Madisen Belton knocked down a bucket and plus-one in the quarter, but Fairfield only managed five points in the second.
Gray began her second-half explosion by scoring all of the Griffins third-quarter points, Fairfield’s first eight points in the half. Lugoff’s offense continued a lack-luster performance in the third, only putting up five in the third period.
Rachel Larson had six of her team-high eight points in the fourth quarter. She sparked the Demons to a 17-point quarter, five more than they had produced in the first three periods. Lakeyn Boyd had all six of her points in the fourth, and Gray knocked down a couple more baskets to quell the come-back.
