BATESBURG – The Richard Winn Lady Eagles and the King Academy Lady Knights put on a defensive show in front of the Batesburg crowd on Friday night. Richard Winn led most of the way, but a fourth-quarter surge helped King escape with a 26-25 win on their home floor.
Mikaela Miller had four of the Eagles’ nine points in the first quarter, and the King offense only mustered up four in the first. The Knights still had no answers in the second quarter, and only made one bucket in the period. RWA led 16-6 at the half.
Richard Winn’s offense went cold in the third, only putting up two points, but they still maintained an 18-14 lead heading into the fourth. King’s Chloe Herron exploded for 10 points in the fourth quarter, including two trifectas. Herron had a game-high 14 and was the only player on either side to reach double digits.
Gracie Atkerson knocked down a three of her own in the fourth, but it was not enough to stave off the comeback. Atkerson finished with 6 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Miller also finished with 6 points and snagged 6 rebounds. Sophomore Rayne Williams grabbed 8 rebounds and finished with 5 points. Taylor Spires pulled in 15 rebounds and two steals but was held to only four points. Senior Hannah Gibbons scored four and finished with two rebounds and two assists.
The Eagles will travel to Newberry on Friday for their first meeting of the regular season with the region foe.
