COLUMBIA – First year Westwood wrestling coach Brian Bush led his team into an action-packed week of competition last week, and his Redhawks showed up strong. First, the Redhawks traveled to Spring Valley and completely dominated. Westwood went 7-2 against the Vikings, and Jordan Hightower and Eli Villa were among the Redhawks that brought home wins.
Then on the following night, Redhawks outlasted both AC Flora and Bush’s former team, Cardinal Newman. Westwood racked up an easy win against AC Flora, but they got big wins down the stretch and claimed the 40-39 victory.
They followed up their dominant week of performances with a weekend date at Lugoff-Elgin’s 2018 Demon Holiday Classic. Westwood sent four competitors to complete with 28 other teams including the Blythewood Bengals and the Fairfield Central Griffins.
Despite only sending four wrestlers, the Redhawks locked down an 18th place finish at Lugoff-Elgin. All four Redhawks did well enough to qualify for day two of the tourney. Jordan Hightower was the runner in the 152-pound class, and went 3-1 over two days. Tyvion Shannon took home the fourth-place spot at 195 pounds, and had a record of 3-2.
The Bengals and The Griffins did not have any placers.
