MYRTLE BEACH – The Westwood Lady Redhawks opened up the 2018 Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach with the undefeated Class 9A-ranked Miami Stingrays. The Redhawks went toe-to-toe with the Stingrays and nearly put the first blemish on their record. Miami Senior was too much in the end and escaped with a 73-68 win in overtime.
With just 30 seconds remaining in regulation time, Senior Maliyah Lockett scored six points to bring Westwood back from a 52-58 deficit and send the game into overtime. The Stingrays took the early overtime lead outlasted the Redhawks.
Lockett led all scorers with 23 points, and tallied five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Her fellow senior, Unique Drake had an 18-point performance to go along with seven rebounds and five assists.
Nyah Leveretter added another double-double to her resume. She had 14 points and 11 boards. She also rejected four shots. This season, she has averaged 12 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.
