Beaufort bests Eagles in round 1

BEAUFORT – The Richard Winn Eagles ran into a tough Beaufort Academy team in the first round of the SCISA A playoffs, and just like their matchup earlier in the season, Beaufort’s offense proved to be too much. Beaufort tallied nearly 500 yards of just rushing offense in their 66-34 win over RWA.

Beaufort scored just three plays after the game’s opening kickoff. DeShaun Epps broke the drive open on a 39-yard run. A play later, Dawson Coleman found the end-zone on an 11-yard quarterback keeper.

After a Richard Winn punt on their first drive, Beaufort found their way into the end-zone again. Edward McCormick powered into the end-zone from five yards out to secure a 12-0 lead. Late in the first quarter, Zack Taylor got the Eagles on the board via a six-yard quarterback keeper.

But, just a few seconds after the Richard Winn score, Beaufort had a counter. Epps hit the turbo button again, and this time he jetted his way 63-yards to the end-zone.  After an Eagles fumble at the end of the first quarter, Epps stuck again at the beginning of the second with a 58-yard touchdown.

After the turnover led to more Beaufort points, the Eagles ripped off a 65-yard scoring drive that culminated with a two-yard Taylor touchdown run, but the score was quickly answered by Epps’ third touchdown rush of the game.

Taylor brought the Eagles back within two scores late in the second quarter after he found Brandon Miller for a 43-yard touchdown pass. The momentum was short-lived because, with three seconds left in the half, Epps broke off a 39-yard touchdown run. RWA trailed 40-20 at half.

Epps also opened the third quarter with a 25-yard touchdown, his fifth, and he was not done. Richard Winn’s only score of the third quarter came on a monster 58-yard touchdown by Miller. Miller had a solid night with 86 yards rushing on seven carries for one score, and nine receptions for 101 yards and another touchdown.

After Miller’s touchdown, Beaufort went on a 21-0 run. During that span, Epps racked up two more touchdowns. First was an eight-yard Epps touchdown that came after another RWA fumble. The Eagles had four turnovers on the night.

Then in the fourth quarter, Epps nearly went the length of a field en route to a 91-yard touchdown, his seventh and final of the game. Beaufort’s final touchdown as 29-yard pass from Dawson Coleman to Will Tumlin. At the end of the run, Beaufort led 66-28.

Luke Martin scored a late five-yard touchdown for the Eagles.
