Griffins blow Raiders away

WINNSBORO – The Griffins had a tough run of non-conference foes to begin the season, and but they looked back in prime form Friday night in their homecoming matchup against Keenan. Fairfield running backs Will Barber and Chris Suber combined for over 350 yards rushing in the Griffins 61-25 homecoming victory. Fairfield jumped to 2-5 record, and 1-0 in region 3-4A play.

Keenan started on a high note and gave the Griffins’ defense headaches in the first quarter. Raiders’ quarterback Alajuwan Robinson scored the game’s first touchdown after he broke off a 30-yard scramble.

After forcing a Griffins turnover on downs, the Raiders mounted another successful possession. A 40-yard run by Eric Troutman set up Chris Reed for a one yard touchdown run. The Raiders went up 13-0.

Suber got the wheels rolling for the Griffins on their next possession. He got behind the defense for a 76-yard run, but was dragged down before he could make it into the end zone. Barber capped the drive off with a nine-yard touchdown run.

Late in the first quarter, Kendrick Stringfellow hopped on a Keenan fumble. The Griffins converted the turnover into a 41-yard Barber touchdown. Edwin Aguilera nailed the extra point to put the Griffins ahead 14-13.

Another Keenan mistake lead to more Griffins points in the second quarter. Keenan coughed the ball up in their own territory and this time Jontavius Henry jumped on it. Two plays later, Suber scored a six-yard touchdown.

The Raiders pulled within one midway through the second quarter. Alajuwan Robinson dialed up the five-yard scoring pass to Jonathan Ross. Fairfield was quick to reply. A minute and a half later, Stephon Gadsden found Justice Boyd for a 15-yard score.

Gadsden also notched the first score of the second half. His 13-yard touchdown scramble was the beginning of a 34-point second half. Barber and Devin Johnson also scored touchdowns in the second half onslaught. The Griffins held 47-25 lead by the time the dust settled in the third quarter.

Keenan’s sole score in the third quarter came on a one-yard run by Zion Thurmond.

Suber recorded his second touchdown of the night in the fourth quarter after he charged into the end-zone from eight yards out. Late in the fourth, Gadsden put the final nail in with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jacob McManus.

The Griffins are back on the road this week with a short-trip to Camden High for their second region contest.
