LAURENS – Richard Winn broke their game losing slump last week in blow-out fashion, and this week it was more of the same when the Eagles traveled to Laurens Academy. The Eagles only led 16-12 at the beginning of the second quarter, but from there on it was all Richard Winn. The Eagles proceeded to go on an unanswered 41-point scoring streak and cruised the 57-18 win.
The Crusaders took an early lead after they concocted a long scoring drive to open the game. A seven yard touchdown pass capped off the drive. The Eagles had a swift response. Zack Taylor countered with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Hudson Wade. Jake Clyburn executed the successful two-point conversion. Richard Winn converted all four of their two-point conversion attempts.
Richard Winn’s quarterback tandem of Taylor and Dru Caldwell gave the Crusaders’ secondary fits all night. They combined to 16-for-20 passing with 262 yards and three touchdowns each.
Taylor used his legs to give Richard Winn a 16-6 lead late in the first quarter. His three-yard quarterback keeper was the last score of the first quarter, but 16 second into the second, Laurens stuck again.
Laurens 85-yard opening quarter score pulled the Crusaders within four, but it was their last score until the fourth. Less than two minutes later, Taylor scored on another quarterback keeper, and that began Richard Winn’s 34-point second quarter.
The next RWA score came in the form of a 12-yard pass from Taylor to Jimmy McKeown. McKeown had six catches, 115 yards and two touchdown receptions. Brandon Miller scored later in the quarter with a four-yard rushing score. Caldwell tacked on two more passing touchdowns before the end of the second, and the Eagles went into halftime leading 50-12.
The avalanche of Richard Winn points did not end with the first half. Taylor added one last insurance score in the third quarter with a 54-yard pass to Joey Bannister. Laurens scored a late junk-time touchdown on a five-yard pass.
Richard Winn’s record now rests at 3-4, and Friday, the Eagles host Calhoun Academy for their Homecoming game.
