WINNSBORO – Mr. Sidney Buchanan “Buck” Cooke, 84, of Winnsboro passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2018. Born in Kannapolis, NC he was the son of the late Herman Smith and Annie Overcash Cooke.
Buck graduated from NC State University in 1956. There he lettered in track and was in the R.O.T.C. He served in the Army at Fort Lee, VA and retired as a Captain from the National Guard. He was then employed by Fieldcrest-Cannon as Plant Manager.
Buck and his wife Carol have had a 45-year interest in Historic Preservation. In that time, they restored Mill Hill Plantation with State recognized gardens, re-habed a historic house on the Battery in Charleston, SC, and bought and restored The Oaks Plantation in Fairfield County.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carol Phillips Cooke; two sons, Nathan Buchanan Cooke and John Nicholas Cooke (Yolanda); three sisters, Phyllis Maby, Nancy Bleckley, and Gayle Sebastian; and five grandchildren, Lauren (Justin Henderson), Allison, Anna, Rachel, and Alexander Buchanan Cooke.
In addition to his parents, Buck is predeceased by three brothers, Max, Jack, and Herman Cooke, Jr.
The family received visitors from 5-7 pm Friday, Aug. 18, at Pope Funeral Home in Winnsboro. Memorial services will be held at a later date in North Carolina.
