BLYTHEWOOD – The Westwood defense kept their early season dominance rolling on Friday against Lower Richland. The Redhawks gave up 14 to Lugoff, seven last week to Blythewood and this week they shut down the Diamond Hornets in their 40-12 win. They have outscored opponents 111-35 in only three games.
Ahmon Green and his five total touchdowns kept Lower Richland from ever getting close enough to smell the lead. Green’s 21-yard touchdown pass to the reliable Cam Atkins led off the scoring escapades. Green struck again later in the first on an 18-yard touchdown toss to another of his consistent playmakers, Christian Horn.
Westwood ended the first quarter with a 14-0 lead and Green used his feet to stretch that lead in the second quarter. The Redhawks’ only score of the second was Green’s seven-yard quarterback keeper. An 18-yard touchdown pass before halftime kept the Diamond Hornets’ hope alive.
A scoreless third quarter allowed them to stay alive even longer, but in the fourth quarter Westwood dashed any comeback potential.
Early in the fourth, Cortes Braham, another member of the loaded Redhawks’ receiving core, found his way to the end-zone on a two-yard pass from Green. Redhawks’ tight end Rashad McCain showed off his wheels on a 43-yard touchdown pass, Green’s fourth scoring pass of the night. The McCain touchdown put Westwood up 34-6 late in the fourth.
Cam Atkins dashed through Diamond Hornet defense for a 41-yard rushing score, the last Redhawk score of the night. Lower Richland managed one last junk-time touchdown on a short-rushing score.
The Redhawks have next week off. Their next taste of action is a non-conference home game on Sept.14 against South Aiken.
