BLYTHEWOOD – The town’s annual Independence Day Celebration will once again shower the night sky over Doko Meadows Park with a dazzling display of fireworks, beginning about 9:30 p. m., on Tuesday, July 3.
But festivities will begin much earlier. Starting at 4 p.m., there will be live music, food, games and fun. Miss Watermelon South Carolina will be on hand for a lively watermelon seed-spitting fundraiser contest.
The rocking red, white and blue July 4 celebration in the park is a family friendly opportunity to bring the kids, set up the lawn chairs (leave the coolers and canopies at home) and take in an evening of live performances by EboniRamm (from 5 – 5:45 p. m.), the Blues DeLuxe band (from 6 – 7 p. m.) and DB Bryant (from 7:30 – 9:30 p. m.)
“As DB Bryant sings the last strains of The Star Spangled Banner, the sky will light up with an amazing display of fireworks,” said Steve Hasterok, the Events and Conference Center Director for the Town of Blythewood. “Last year we had about four thousand people at the event. It is our best attended event of the year.”
Food vendors will include Doko Smoke, Chick-fil-A, Scotties, The Donut Guy, The Haute Dog Lady, The Nutty Squirrel, Randolph Italian Ice, Sweet Pea’s Ice Cream and The Peanut Guy and Papa John’s Pizza.
The evening will end with a crescendo of fireworks, reminders of the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air and the proof that, after a night of perilous fighting during the War of 1812, on the morning of September 13, 1815, our star-spangled banner still waved over Baltimore’s embattled Fort McHenry. It was this vision that inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the poem that became the Star Spangled Banner.
Enjoy this year’s celebration at Doko Meadows Park. It’s free and open to the public.
McLean Road directly behind Doko Meadows Park will be temporarily closed on July 3, 2018, from 2 p. m. to 10 p. m. to safely accommodate the celebration.
