BLYTHEWOOD – It was a fundraiser for a great cause with community groups setting up tents in Doko Park to bring awareness and financial support to cancer survivors and their fight for life.

The annual Blythewood Relay for Life event opened with a welcome by Mayor J. Michael Ross, invocation by Mike Sears, New Kirk Presbyterian Church Pastor and the opening event – cancer survivors and caregivers bursting through a giant pink arch onto the park trail for the traditional relay for life.

While the relay proceeded, the fundraising began in earnest in tents throughout the park sponsored by schools, companies and churches to name a few. The theme this year was rock and roll music and each tent featured a rock music scenario.

Freeway Music provided entertainment and there were line dances, Zumba, a lip sync battle and a luminaria ceremony.

And throughout the evening, there were food trucks and ongoing kid and team activities.

“The weather and the crowds were great,” Ross said. “This is a wonderful, meaningful event for the whole town.”
