BLYTHEWOOD – Blythewood resident Thomas N. McLean, III has received a Presidential nomination and accepted an appointment to attend the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.
McLean, a senior at Spring Valley High School, will begin attending the Air Force Academy in June. He plans to major in Aerospace Engineering and will play Division I soccer for the Falcons.
McLean, a captain for his junior and senior seasons, helped lead the Vikings to the third round of the state playoffs in his senior campaign. The senior striker averaged 0.9 goals per game and 0.4 assists per game for the Vikings.
McLean played club soccer for SCUFC 99 Elite. The team racked up accolades, winning three State Cups, the National League and becoming the first SCUFC team to advance to the National Championship Series.
A National Merit Finalist, AP Scholar, and National Honor Society student in the Discovery Magnet Program, McLean’s drone research won regional and state science fair awards in his sophomore and junior years.
McLean, son of Deb and Neil McLean, will carry on a long family tradition of serving his country. His grandfather, father and uncles served in the US Air Force.
