BATESBURG – Superb pitching highlighted most of Richard Winn’s road game at King Academy Tuesday night, but the Eagles’ bats showed up in the clutch and propelled them to a 7-2 win. All of Richard Winn’s runs came in the sixth and seventh innings.
Freshman ace Zack Taylor dominated much of the game and took home a complete game victory. He seated 10 batters, only allowed two hits and threw strikes on 73 percent of his 82 total pitches. The Knights only two runs of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Tyler List was the Knights first run, and he crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Trevor Fulmer sacrifice flied to score Billy Amick from third. Amick had doubled earlier in the inning and moved up to third on the wild pitch. That was it for the Knights’ offense.
King’s starting pitcher, Joe Sauls delivered a solid night through his first five innings of work, but in the sixth inning he fell apart. Peyton Gilbert was the first batter in the top of sixth inning, and he reached first base on an error at first.
A Cameron Bass single and an error on a Taylor fly ball allowed Gilbert to move to third. Luke Martin plated Gilbert on a fielder’s choice ground ball, then Jimmy McKeown came through with one of the biggest hits of the game. He popped a two-run homer to left field and put the Eagles up 4-2.
Taylor added an RBI-single in the seventh, and Martin plated two more runs with a line-drive single to left field. Martin had three RBIs on the night.
Taylor retired the side in order in the bottom seventh to secure the victory.
