From the Pulpit: We Can Trust the Word of God

In the first chapter of his first epistle, the apostle Peter wrote about the salvation we have received in Christ Jesus. In so doing, he described the means by which we learn of that salvation, that being the word of God.

In his description of the word of God found in I Peter (1:22-2:3), he writes three truths that let us know we can trust in the word of God. First, he tells us the word of God is infallible. He says we are born “not of corruptible seed but in corruptible.” (I Peter 1:23) Truly, the word of God contains no errors, mistakes, or contradictions. It is completely and perfectly consistent. (II Peter 1:20,21; II Timothy 3:16,17; I Thessalonians 2:13). Second, Peter tells us the word of God is indestructible. Peter says the word of God “lives and abides forever.” (I Peter 1:23-25) The word of God will never end, and it will never change (Psalm 111:7,8; Mark 13:31). Third, Peter tells us the word of God is indispensible. Peter lets us know we cannot be saved without the word (I Peter 1:22) nor can be grow without it (I Peter 2:2). Without the word of God there would be no recorded message of salvation! (Psalm 19:7-11)

Because the word of God is infallible, indestructible and indispensible, surely we should view it as worthy of our full attention. We should meditate upon it day and night. More than this, we should obey it as well!

Based upon Peter’s description of the word of God which brings us the truth concerning salvation, can we say in all honesty that we are giving God’s word the respect it deserves? Can we say it holds a place near and dear to our heart? Can we say we are freeing willing to obey what God has commanded us to do so that we can honor the word He has given us? Remember, we can trust the word of God.
