YORK – The Westwood girls’ basketball squad has rolled through their opponents, but on Friday they suffered their second loss of the season, their first in Region 3-4A, to Richland Northeast. Then on Tuesday night, the York Cougars suffered the brunt of Westwood’s determination to get back in the win column. The Redhawks pummeled the Cougars early and often, and brought a 73-34 win back to Blythewood.
York’s offense struggled early to keep up with the three-headed threat of Unique Drake, Mya Belton and Nyah Leveretter. Levretter burned the Cougars to the tune of 32 points, 14 rebounds four blocks and shot 85 percent from the field.
Drake nearly racked-up a mind boggling quadruple-double. She had 11 points to go along with her ten assists, ten steals and seven rebounds. Belton put up 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
After a quarter of play, Westwood led 24-12, and that was the only quarter that York would break double-digit scoring. The Redhawk offense tripled the Cougars’ offense in the second and third quarter, effectively wrapping the game before the final period.
Russell Jones accounted for half of Westwood’s points on the boy’s end of things. His game high 32 points powered the Redhawks to a 59-52 victory in York.
Westwood celebrates their senior night on Friday against the Lancaster Bruins, then close out the season with road games against South Pointe and Ridge View.
