WINNSBORO – The Fairfield Central boys played Camden tight in the first quarter of their Region IV-3A game Tuesday.
Three-pointers from Montravis White, Sintell Quattlebaum, and Ladeveaux Ashford in the first period kept the young Griffins apace against the more seasoned Bulldogs.
Fairfield Central’s shooting dried up beginning in the second quarter, and with the scoring drought, Camden ran the floor with ease and closed out a 68-42 win over the Griffins.
“We played a great first half, to be honest,” Griffins head coach Brian Sanders said. “We came out in the third quarter knowing what they were going to do, but it’s how you execute. Zero points in the third quarter ain’t gonna get it.”
Fairfield Central (0-12 overall, 0-6 region) came up with eight points in the second quarter, and the Camden defense shut out the Griffins in the third. The Bulldogs rolled on a 41-8 run over those two periods, which easily sealed the win.
Thanks to its distance shooting—Griffins shooters sank seven 3-pointers on the night—Fairfield Central closed out the first quarter tied at 13 with the Bulldogs.
Then Camden pressed on the gas with an 11-0 run to start the second quarter and cruise to a 35-21 halftime lead.
And then the Bulldogs came out of the locker room and blanked the Griffins 19-0 in the third.
“That one killed us,” Sanders said. “There ain’t too many games you’re going to win when you don’t score any points in the third quarter.”
Down 54-21 by the end of the third, Fairfield Central cut into Camden’s lead in the final quarter with a 21-14 advantage.
“It bothers them,” Sanders said about the players being affected by not winning a game this season. “We practice harder than the majority of the teams that we play. It bothers all of us, but we’ve got a lot of support from the administration and the staff. I know what it takes to win, and I tell my kids, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.”
