SUMTER – The Richard Winn Boys needed every single one of points they earned in the first round of the SCISA State basketball playoffs to inch past Dorchester Academy, 47-46, and move on to their second round match-up against Cathedral Academy. However, in round two the Eagles were not as lucky. After falling behind early, they could not stop Cathedral from racking up a 59-39 win.
Ethan McManus was the only Eagle to sink a bucket in the first quarter, meanwhile Cathedral racked up a 12-point first. Tre Steward and John Price scored more for the Generals in the first than Richard Winn did collectively.
Lane Bickett’s six points led to a slightly more productive second quarter for the Eagles, but they could not stop the streaking Cathedral offense. The Generals ran up a 15-point second quarter with the help of five more points from John Price. Cathedral also sank four of their five free throws in the second.
After two quarters, Cathedral had more than doubled up the Eagles and the lead stood at 27-13 going into the halftime break. Price came up big again for Cathedral in third quarter, nailing two shots from beyond the perimeter. The Crusaders exploded for a 21-point third that put any chances of an Eagles’ come back to bed.
