WINNSBORO – The Lady Griffins hosted Rock Hill Tuesday night, and it was a long night for the Griffins. The Bearcats trounced on the Griffins early and rode the early momentum to a 81-50 blowout.
“It was definitely frustrating,” Griffins’ head coach Amelia Miller said. “It felt like we didn’t come to play tonight. I felt like we don’t know where our minds was, but just nothing to lose to sleep over, we know it just wasn’t our game.”
Griffins’ star Tameshia Woodard went down early in the first half and did not return to action. The severity of Woodard’s injury has yet to be determined.
“Losing Tameshia early didn’t help it either,” Miller said. “Being that she’s the only senior, and where she goes we go.”
Rock Hill exploited Woodard’s absence and ripped the Griffin defense to the tune of a 16-2 first quarter. Rikoya Anderson tripled Fairfield’s first quarter output with seven points and Tee Ballard had five.
Lakeyn Boyd had the Griffns’ only points in the first quarter and accounted for seven of their 14 first half points. The Bearcats kept the pressure on in the second quarter, and Anderson racked up five more points. Ballard added four more to her total, and Rock Hill led 34-14 at the half.
Fairfield’s offense continued to struggle after the halftime break. Boyd and Cristin Gray combined for all seven of the Griffins’ third quarter points. The Bearcats boasted a 14-3 run over most of the quarter, and Makenna Thompson had nine in the third.
Rock Hill’s dominance translated to a 53-21 lead with just a one quarter left to play. The Bearcats opened the fourth with another long scoring streak, instead this time it was a 14-0 run. Lakeyn Boyd scored the Griffins’ first points of the period at the 2:50 mark.
The Griffins get a chance to rebound at home Friday against Chester.
