BLYTHEWOOD – For the first time in a long time, the Blythewood girls’ basketball team had control of the floor.
The Lady Bengals rolled past the Gators 62-28 to collect their first Region 5-5A victory of the season at the Blythewood gym.
Chisom Emetu led the way for the Bengals (3-13 overall, 1-7 region) with 15 points. Kiki Jackson and LaKyra Weeks followed up with 10 points apiece.
“It’s just crazy. We’ve been losing for a while,” Emetu said. “Just to get that win, it’s the greatest feeling.”
River Bluff proved no match for the persistent Bengals. Blythewood took a 14-4 lead after the first quarter, and trotted off to the locker room at halftime holding a 29-7 advantage.
A 25-point third quarter put the Bengals up 59-17 going into the fourth.
After the game, Emetu and her teammates came out of the locker room wearing pink T-shirts emblazoned with the school’s Bengal and the phrase “Prove them wrong.”
“It’s like for anyone who goes against us, even ourselves sometimes,” Emetu said. “Because we can be our biggest enemy. So we decided to go out every night and prove them wrong.”
Emetu added about the win, “It’s a success as in progress. Everybody on the team seems to be progressing, and we want it more. We’ve got more determination.”
