WINNSBORO – The Richard Winn boys’ basketball team lost to Whitmire on Monday, but Tuesday, on the second of their two-game home stretch, they picked up a thrilling win over Thomas Sumter. With time expiring, Hudson Wade hit a dagger of a three-pointer to give Richard Winn a 47-46 win.
The first two quarters belonged to the Generals. Jacob Brown nailed three triples for the Generals in the first quarter, and after one, Thomas Sumter was ahead 18-10. Brown had 16 points and was the only General to top the double digit plateau.
Ethan McManus matched Brown’s output with 16 of his own. Hudson Wade put in 11, and Noah Edwards had 10 points, six from the free throw line.
The Eagles’ offense sputtered in the second and Thomas Sumter took full advantage. Led by Zach Fugate’s second-quarter points, the Generals went on a 7-0 run, and by halftime they were leading 32-21.
Midway through the third, a John Russell three-point play cut the Generals’ lead back to single digits. The Eagles’ spent the rest of the third fast on Thomas Sumter’s heels, and heading into the final period, the TSA lead had shrunk to 43-40.
The Eagles’ struck first in the fourth, and tied the game up courtesy of an Ethan McManus three-pointer. Tyler Millwood answered right back with a three of his own, but that was the last Thomas Sumter score.
Noah Edwards sank a free-throw late that pulled RWA within two. Late in the quarter, Fugate missed a crucial opportunity to put the Eagles’ away from the free throw line. Then, before the final buzzer sounded, Hudson Wade drained the game-winning three.
The Eagles will not be back at home until their TruVista Christmas Tournament on Dec.19 and Dec.20. They will be on the road Friday at Greenwood Christian.
