SALEM, VA – Former Blythewood Bengal standout defensive lineman Nate Brunson has earned the honor of being called a National Champion. Brunson committed to the perennial Division III powerhouse University of Mount Union last season, and this year, as a freshman, got to hoist the National Championship trophy after the Raiders downed the defending champs Mary-Hardin Baylor in the Stagg Bowl.
The Mount Union football program has been nothing short of a powerhouse. The Stagg Bowl win marked National Championship number 13 for the Raiders, and to claim the gold they had to a knock off a top 15 team in each of their last four games.
They have now competed in 12 consecutive Stagg Bowls and won the Ohio Athletic Conference an eye-popping 28 times. Until last season, the Raiders had run off a mind-boggling win streak of 112 games in a row.
Brunson competed in five games for Mount Union this season, recorded one tackle and forced a fumble. While at Blythewood, Brunson was a team captain, an all-region player and was voted the team defensive lineman of the year.
He also spent time as a Westwood Redhawk and, as a junior at Westwood, he was invited to the Football University Top Gun Showcase in Dublin, Ohio.
