Anxiety is worry on steroids. It is a feeling of fear that can ultimately consume and overwhelm us if not dealt with properly. Yes, anxiety can bring about mental strain, emotional exhaustion due to feelings of doom and helplessness, and even physiological problems such as rapid heartbeat, excessive sweating, nausea, dizziness, chest pain, headaches, muscle tension, and digestive problems. Indeed, anxiety is the enemy of capability, conquest, and contentment.
Speaking in practical terms, anxiety can keep us from asking for that raise at work because we are worried we will be laughed at for even asking. It can keep us from seeking a new job because we are fearful we could not perform up to expectations. It can also keep us from trying to start a relationship because we fear we will be rejected. It can even keep us from reaching for our dreams because we are afraid we will fail.
Jesus, our Lord and Savior, has told us that worry or anxiety is not good. He has even commanded us not to worry or be anxious. He said in Matthew (6:25), “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?” After making this initial statement, Jesus goes on to say God is looking out for us, and He will help us. Jesus then concludes His teaching with these words in Matthew (6:33,34): But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
Anxiety on our part can be conquered if we will seek out God and allow Him to provide what we need. In order for this happen, we must do what the apostle Paul told us to do in Philippians (4:5,6). He said, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made know to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Anxiety can be overcome. It takes focus on God, trust in Him, and a powerful prayer life. May God strengthen us so that we will be anxiety-free and in turn live victoriously in our lives!
Healthy advice for all of us.
