WINNSBORO (Sept. 5, 2016) – The Fairfield Central Griffins suffered their first loss Saturday night in a 35-14 blowout at the hands of the rival Blythewood Bengals.

The Bengals struck first courtesy of a 35-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Jordyn Adams. If the name Jordyn Adams sounds familiar, you may be an ESPN fan. Adams recently gained viral notoriety with his video of a jaw-dropping dunk that made it all the way to SportsCenter.

“He’s one of the best I’ve seen in a while,” Griffins head coach Demetrius Davis said. “He’s very athletic, he can run, he can throw it. I mean he can do it all, and what happens is he can extend the play. All of their touchdowns came off big plays that he just extended.”

With the first quarter expiring, Griffins quarterback Stanley McManus ripped off a 33-yard run, and he finished up the scoring drive with a 5-yard rushing touchdown, but it would not take long for the Bengals to answer back.

On the next Bengals drive, Adams hooked up with Terrance Coates for an 86-yard bomb that moved Blythewood from the shadows of their own goal post down to the Griffins’ 5-yard line. A couple of plays later Adams capped off the drive with a 2-yard rushing touchdown, his second of the game.

As halftime neared, the Griffins moved into field goal range and looked to bring the score to 14-9, but the kick attempt was stuffed by the Bengals.

Blythewood got the ball coming out of the half, and made the drive count.

Adams made the Griffins pay once again through the air, this time it was a 35-yard strike to receiver Kameron Riley. This stretched the Bengals’ lead to 15 points, and the third quarter only got worse for the Griffins.

Griffins defensive end Tevin Belk scooped up a Bengals fumble and returned it to the house, only to have the play called back for an illegal block in the back. Fairfield retained the ball but were forced to punt on the ensuing drive.

“Because of the fact that we struggled on offense, if we could have got that touchdown we can cut that thing down to 21-14,” Davis said. “It was a call that I felt like probably shouldn’t have been called, but at the end of the day, you know, if they call it they call it. It was a tough situation.”

Jerrell Suber-O’Neal and Tony Ruff, the Griffins’ dynamic running tandem, struggled to put anything together. The two combined for just 59 yards on 26 attempts, and as a result the Griffins had a hard time keeping any drives going.

“We was missing Travious Williams this week, our starting left tackle, due to a suspension,” Davis said. “We had to move our right guard to left tackle and our defensive lineman to left guard. Not to make any excuses because I thought our kids still played hard in spite of that, but we just really couldn’t get it going up front the way we normally get going.”

While still in the third quarter, the dynamic playmaker Jordyn Adams completed another 35-yard touchdown pass. This time his target was the big tight end, Roger Carter.

Things went from bad to worse on the Griffins’ next drive. Fairfield Central quarterback Stanley McManus was picked off by Bengals’ defensive back Jawaun Corbin, who took the ball 38 yards to the end zone for Blythewood’s third touchdown of the quarter.

“Momentum shifted,” Davis said. “We gave up a touchdown very early on blown coverage. They were able to score 21 points in that quarter and that ended up being the tale of the tape. That ended up being the difference in the game.”

The fourth quarter was all but a technicality, although McManus completed a 12-yard touchdown pass to J.R. Edmonds, it was too little too late.

The Griffins will be back in action on Sept. 9 when they take on Ridge View. The game will be held at Spirit Communications Park, home of the Columbia Fireflies.

“It would have been a little more exciting if we had played better (Saturday),” Davis said. “But it’ll be great for the kids. It will be great for the band, for the cheerleaders; everybody gets the chance to play in a professional facility. We’re playing against a very good Ridge View team that beat the team that just beat the daylights out of us.”
