WINNSBORO – The Richard Winn Academy Eagles helped their fans enjoy every minute of the week’s Homecoming festivities with a 52-2 win Friday over the Saints of Clarendon Hall.

Eagle running back John Coleman kicked the game off with a 44-yard touchdown run on RWA’s opening possession of the game. Mitchell Gibbons connected on the extra point, giving the Eagles an early 7-0 lead.

“The most important thing this week was the football game,” RWA head coach Dan Dickerson said. “Not the girls, the activities or any other thing. The most important thing was what was going to happen out on the field and that is what led us to making sure we won this game tonight.”

Clarendon Hall’s first drive did not last long, thanks to the explosiveness of the Eagle defense. After the defense held the Saints to a three-and-out, RWA senior Webb Yongue began his night of long touchdown runs with a 43-yard haul. A successful 2-point conversion gave the Eagles a quick 15-0 lead.

The Saints’ offense continued to struggle as they only gained two first downs the entire first half, both of which came as a result of Eagle penalties. With the Saints reeling on offense, Yongue continued his scoring spree with a 7-yard touchdown run, extending the RWA lead to 21-0 after a missed extra point.

Clarendon Hall’s next possession was cut short when Nic Stillwell recovered a fumble for the Eagles in Saints’ territory. The turnover set up a 26-yard touchdown strike from Gunnar Hensley to Bryant Carvalho with no time left on the first quarter clock. The score increased the RWA lead to 27-0 after another missed extra point.

The Eagle defense continued to use their explosive athleticism in the second quarter to keep the Saints from making any gains. The Eagle defense, doing their job to perfection, gave Yongue an opportunity to put on a show. Yongue exploded for a 95-yard touchdown run on the Eagles’ opening possession of the second quarter, pushing their lead 33-0 after yet another miscue on the extra point.

Coleman scored again with a 59-yard touchdown run that pretty much sealed the fate for Clarendon Hall, extending the Eagle lead to 39-0 in the second quarter.

Clarendon Hall finally made it to the red zone late in the first half. While penalties aided the Saints on the drive, Richard Winn stopped the drive with only 6 seconds left in the half.

Hensley need only those 6 seconds to ring up one more score before the half. Hensley hit Carvalho again with an 85-yard touchdown pass, putting the Eagles up 46-0 at the break.

Richard Winn scored one final time in the game thanks to Yongue’s 65-yard touchdown run in the early part of the third quarter. Clarendon Hall ended the shutout gaining a safety on defense making the final score 52-2 for another Eagle win.

“Now we can celebrate the win and enjoy the results from Homecoming,” Dickerson said. Now 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the region, Richard Winn travels to Jefferson Davis Academy Friday (Sept. 25) for another region road test. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
