NEWBERRY – The Richard Winn Academy Lady Eagles used another dominating performance Tuesday night against the Lady Eagles of Newberry Academy to race to a 50-21 victory.
The visiting Lady Eagles opened the game with a 9-0 run. The full-court pressure on Newberry by the Lady Eagles led to many opening first half turnovers as Newberry did not protect the ball very well. The tenacious RWA defense held Newberry Academy to only 4 first-quarter points, and but a single point in the second frame. Despite missing a lot of open shots, Jaycie Johnson helped Richard Winn go on a 6-0 run to end the second quarter as Richard Winn led at the half 25-5.
Despite a lot of turnovers and fouls between both the Lady Eagles of Richard Winn and Newberry Academy, the lead would increase in the third quarter to 37-7 as the full-court pressure provided by Richard Winn held Newberry to a single basket. Newberry had their best showing in the final period, out-scoring the Lady Eagles 14-13, but the effort was too little and much too late.
The Lady Eagles of RWA remain undefeated on the season, improving to 19-0 overall and 7-0 in SCISA Class A-Region II.
Johnson and Emily Brigman both led with 14 points for Richard Winn. Richard Winn’s next game is Senior Night Friday (Feb. 6) against King Academy.
