RWA Steamroller Marches On

Webb Yongue sweeps around the Saints’ defense.

SUMMERTON – The Richard Winn Eagles traveled to Summerton with a game plan to make sure the Clarendon Hall Saints did not beat them with their talented running backs. The Eagles did more than that with another dominating performance on both sides of the ball once again, hammering the Saints 57-14.

Led on offense by senior quarterback Matt Taylor, the Eagles of Richard Winn spoiled the homecoming game for the Clarendon Hall Saints. The Eagles got on the board first with a 61-yard touchdown pass from Taylor to junior Webb Yongue. The Eagle defense stopped the Saints’ prominent run game on their opening possession, forcing the Saints to punt.

Taylor quickly struck again with a 23-yard touchdown run. The Saints of Clarendon Hall responded with a touchdown on their second possession with a 26-yard touchdown run by senior Daniel Pappas. On the following kickoff, Yongue returned the kickoff deep into Saints territory to give the Eagle offense great field position for their third possession of the first quarter. Taylor capitalized on the great field position with a 10-yard touchdown run to give the Eagles a 21-6 lead at the end of the first.

The Eagle defense continued their strong performance going into the second quarter with a fumble recovery deep inside Saints territory. That set up Taylor again, who linked up with senior Hunter Gibbons on an 11-yard touchdown pass.

“Our defense has been performing better week by week, even after our early season struggles,” RWA head coach Dan Dickerson said. “Clarendon Hall has some great tailbacks but we had a lot of people on defense slow down their backs, which allowed our offense to run our fast pace.”

The Eagle defense continued to slow down the Saints offense and forced another turnover on the Saints’ next possession. The Eagle offense failed to capitalize, however, and came up short on a fourth-down conversion attempt. Clarendon Hall took advantage of the opportunity with a strong drive down the field with the clock winding down on the first half. The Saints capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Dustin Way. The Eagle offense responded with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Taylor to Yongue with 34 seconds left before the break, giving them a commanding 37-14.

The Saints opened the third quarter with a strong drive, but came up empty against the stingy defense of Richard Winn. Midway through the third, the Eagles scored on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Taylor to senior Conrad Sharpe.

The Eagle defense forced another turnover deep into the third quarter setting up Yongue for a 26-yard touchdown run that pretty much sealed the game for the Eagles as they went up 50-14 at the end of the period.

The Eagles’ final score came from junior John Coleman on a 65-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles have steamrolled their way through their first five games with a spotless record, and Dickerson said the competitive fire is still burning.

“It is truly easy to keep our guys motivated because they all love playing for one another and know that their goal to hoist that state championship trophy is not a hard task if they continue the course,” Dickerson said. “They are enjoying themselves very much and want to continue to remain undefeated.”

The Eagles defend their 5-0 record against Jefferson Davis for homecoming this Friday.
