WINNSBORO – The Richard Winn Eagles celebrated their new inductees into their school’s Hall of Fame by demolishing the visiting Sun Devils of Charleston Collegiate with a 62 point first half performance, en route to a 76-0 lopsided win.
Last week’s first half struggles with penalties and defensive mishaps almost cost the Eagles the game, and it took a dominating second half performance to topple Laurens Academy. This week the RWA defense had their best showing of the season, forcing four turnovers, as their offense continued to look unstoppable as they have so far this season.
“This week we worked on the basics to have our defense prepared for the game,” RWA head coach Dan Dickerson said. “In Laurens, penalties and mishaps almost cost us the game so we wanted to make sure our guys remembered the small things on defense to make sure we regained our dominance.”
The Eagles would begin their scoring onslaught with senior quarterback Matt Taylor connecting with a 45-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Webb Yongue. After the Sun Devils of Charleston Collegiate could not get any offense together on the following possession, the Eagles would score another touchdown on a 3-yard pass from Taylor to junior running back John Coleman. Eagle’s junior defensive lineman John Sandifer would recover a fumble for the defense as the Sun Devil offense continued to struggle to gain any momentum to stop the bleeding.
Taylor added another touchdown for the Eagles with a 69-yard touchdown run with 5:36 remaining in the first quarter. The Eagle defense would again stop Charleston Collegiate on their ensuing possession, which would lead to Taylor connecting with senior Hunter Gibbons on a 60-yard touchdown pass. The Sun Devil offensive woes would continue on their next drive as they continued to struggle moving the ball up field against this stingy Eagle defense. The Sun Devils were again forced to punt, which Yongue fielded at the RWA 48 and returned 52 yards for another Eagle touchdown and a 35-0 first quarter lead.
The second quarter would begin for the Sun Devils as it did in the first, with no offensive production, while the Eagles’ juggernaut continued. Coleman would score the Eagle’s first touchdown of the second quarter with a 31-yard touchdown run. Yongue ended the following Sun Devil drive, picking off a pass and returning it 37 yards for an Eagle’s touchdown. Coleman added another score with a 14-yard touchdown run. The Eagles would score the final touchdown of the second quarter with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Taylor to senior Conrad Sharpe, which would give them a commanding 62-0 halftime lead.
With the entire second half on a running clock the Eagles would only score once in the third quarter and once as well in the fourth quarter. Coleman would score both second half touchdowns for the Eagles on a 13-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and a 5-yard fumble return in the fourth.
The Eagles travel to Summerton next week to take on the Saints of Clarendon Hall.
“We have a tough task with our next game against Clarendon Hall, who has some pretty big backs and a fullback who is very decent,” Dickerson said. “We just need to continue playing our game and we will continue to win games.”
