BLYTHEWOOD – The first region matchup of the season was a close contest between Lugoff-Elgin High School and Westwood. The match was tight all the way, and went the full five-game distance. In the end, the Demons got the better of it and defeated the Lady Redhawks, 18-25, 25-23, 25-20, 18-25 and 9-15.
Westwood head coach Ciji Kuhlmann said before the match that she was focused on the defense.
“Our strategy is to play defense,” she said. “Lugoff-Elgin is a defense heavy squad. Our offense will have it rough trying to score a point on them, so we have to play defense.”
And a defensive game it was. L-E, without the big hitters, concentrated on keeping the ball in play and scoring by making the other team make the mistakes that cost points. Their strategy worked, and they wound up on top.
The Lady Redhawks were slated to travel across town Thursday to face the Lady Bengals of Blythewood High for what most certainly will be a tough opponent.
