NEWBERRY – Fairfield County’s summer baseball squad finished their season last week at the top of the heap, knocking off Restoration Outreach 5-1 on July 19 in the title game at Newberry. Stanley “Monk” McManus got the win for Fairfield on the mound with his defense playing error-free ball behind him.
McManus struck out nine from the hill and went 2-for-3 at the plate. Coker Gilbert had a 3-hit afternoon, while Trey “Big Poppy” Williams went 2-for-3. Defensively, Vincent Beaver flashed the leather at shortstop making no less than three critical plays, while Lane Floyd made a clutch inning-ending catch in the outfield in the top of the fourth.
The summer baseball program was a joint effort between the Fairfield County and Newberry County recreation departments. The Fairfield team was made up of 13 to 16 year olds from both Richard Winn Academy and Fairfield County schools.
