BLYTHEWOOD – Maureen Bernell “Pete” Amoth, 80, of Blythewood, died Monday, May 19, 2014. Born June 7, 1933, in Wales, N.D., he was a son of the late Christian and Clara Kjemhus Amoth. Pete graduated from the University of North Dakota with a BSBA. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 – 1954, during which he taught Long Range Navigation and Radar Navigation to fighter pilots heading to Korea. He enjoyed a 20 year career with McGraw Edison, Inc., where he served in marketing management positions in six regions of the country.

In 1974 Pete moved to Columbia establishing Caroga Marketing, Inc., which he later sold to become Chairman and CEO of Marketing Data Management Corp. He most recently served as Executive Director of the Pilot Club of Columbia Foundation, which allowed him to work with the Governor’s Office on problems of aging and to prepare delegates to the White House Conference on Aging. The foundation received the “Angel Award” for the management of donated monies by the S.C. Secretary of State. He also established a program to train interns from the USC Graduate School of Social Work, where he had earned an advanced degree in Gerontology.

Pete was also involved in community service and local politics, serving on the Planning Commission of Blythewood, as member of the Central Midlands Council of Governments, serving three terms on the Advisory Board of Directors for Lifeline Systems, Inc. of Boston, Mass. He was treasurer and a member of the board for the Alzheimer’s Association of Columbia, and was a member of the board of Respite House and Senior Care of Columbia. Pete served as Mayor of Blythewood from 2004 to 2008. He was a member of Livings Springs Lutheran Church.

Survivors include daughter, Pamela Ables of Isle of Palms, S.C.; sons, Carl (Bev) Amoth of Hendersonville, N.C., Mark Amoth of Columbia; grandchildren, Kristin (Jason) Sikorski of Okla., Christian (Jennifer) Amoth of S.C., Andrew Amoth of N.C., Chase Souza of N.C.; great grandchildren, McKenzie Amoth and Brody Sikorski; sisters, Joyce Ridley and Judy Moen both of Langdon, N.D.; and brother, Carmen Amoth of Walhalla, N.D. In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his wife, Janie Amalene Holloway Amoth; sister, Ruthie Darling; and brothers, Kenneth and Gerald Amoth.

The funeral service for Mr. Amoth will be held 11 o’clock, Thursday, May 22, at Living Springs Lutheran Church, 4224 Hardscrabble Road, Columbia, with the Rev. Eric E. Fink and the Rev. Dr. David A. Donges officiating. Inurnment will take place at Memorial Gardens of Columbia. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 o’clock, Wednesday evening, at the church.
