BLYTHEWOOD – The Gamecocks kickoff the 2013-2014 equestrian season Friday, when South Carolina hosts Kansas State at 10 a.m. at One Wood Farm in Blythewood, located at 1201 Syrup Mill Road.
South Carolina won the inaugural SEC Championships last season, and the Gamecocks received their SEC Championship rings in a ceremony on Wednesday. They were honored on the field after the first quarter of last Friday night’s football game between South Carolina and Vanderbilt.
South Carolina returns most of its lineup from a season ago, including junior Katherine Schmidt, who has led the Gamecocks in wins her first two years on the team. The Gamecocks are hosting three fall meets this season: Sept. 20 vs. Kansas State, Sept. 20 vs. Fresno State and Oct. 11 vs. Georgia.
The equestrian team has been selected to host the 2014 SEC Equestrian Championship at One Wood Farm, which will run March 28-29. The Gamecocks, along with Auburn University, the University of Georgia and Texas A&M University, will compete for the second Southeastern Conference championship.
Head coach Boo Major of Blythewood was named SEC Coach of the Year last season, and over the summer, the university’s Board of Trustees signed her to a new four-year contract.
Admission to the game on Friday is free and the community is invited. It will be an exciting evening of showjumping that the whole family will enjoy.
