WINNSBORO – A memorial service to celebrate the life of Morris Stephen “Steve” Brakefield, 70, of Winnsboro, will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Winnsboro on Monday, March 11, 2013 at 3 p.m. The Rev. Preston Huntley and the Rev. Jim Neuburger will officiate. The family will receive friends at home, 214 W. High Street, beginning at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2013. Memorials may be made to the Columbarium Fund at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 301 W. Liberty Street, Winnsboro, S.C. 29180 in lieu of flowers.

Morris Stephen “Steve” Brakefield, husband of Janet Ludlow Brakefield, died Thursday, March 7, 2013. He was born July 4, 1942 in Chester, S.C., the son of the late Morris Hayward and Sara Baird Brakefield. A 1966 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Mr. Brakefield was a member of Alpha Phi Omega. He was also a graduate of The School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University. He retired after 41 years in the banking field.

Mr. Brakefield was an active and devoted member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Winnsboro where he sang in the choir, served on the vestry, had been senior warden and spent many years as church treasurer. He was also a member of the Winnsboro Rotary Club, had served as President and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Mr. Brakefield served on the Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce Board, the Central Midlands Regional Planning Council, the Fairfield Memorial Hospital Board, all of which he had served as president or chairman.

Mr. Brakefield is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Janet Ludlow Brakefield of the home, sisters Mary Ann (Herb) Hinson of Matthews, N.C.; June (Jim) Templeton of Woodstock, Ga.; a brother Billy Hall (Becky) of Rock Hill, S.C.; aunts, Mayme Brakefield Gordon, Wilma Brakefield Pendleton and Naomi Barrett Baird all of Rock Hill; five nephews, three nieces and six great nieces. Also, special brother- and sister-in-law Roy and Claudia Anderson of Aynor, S.C.

The family would like to thank Delphine, Joann, Linda, Keesha, Vicky, Rose and Clara, the nurses who cared for Steve at home and sat with him in the hospital. The doctors, nurses and staff of Fairfield Memorial and Palmetto Health Richland in 11 West for taking such good care of Steve. Most especially, the family thanks his nephew, Bradley Anderson, for his kindness and care of his uncle.
