Lady ‘Hawks Fall to Flora, Top Camden

The Lady Falcons of A.C. Flora High School knocked off Westwood Friday night, 58-47, in region play from Columbia.

“We played our best game all season,” said Westwood head coach Christine Hagood. “We played well the whole 32 minutes. Taylor (Toney) had a good shooting game; Kayla (Atkins) had a good inside post game and good rebounding. I was happy with the way we played. If we bring in tonight (Tuesday) what we had Friday, we should have a competitive game tonight.

“The team is emerging and learning to play varsity basketball, finding out what varsity basketball is,” Hagood continued. “These kids haven’t played varsity before, so they understand it takes a lot to be a varsity player.”

Kayla Atkins lays in 2 points against Camden.

Tuesday night, Westwood’s fortunes were reversed as they pounded the Camden Bulldogs 52-40. The Lady Redhawks led start to finish and were never really challenged. The score at the end of the first period was 14-5 Westwood, thanks largely to a 3-pointer and two baskets from Taylor Toney. Camden would never overcome this deficit. The second period was marked by Westwood’s accurate throws from the foul line. They would hit six free throws out of nine attempts. It would also be the quarter in which Camden outscored Westwood by more than one point, thanks to Sharneese Gary’s two 3-pointers and one field goal. Gary was Camden’s high scorer with 11 points.

The third period was the lowest-scoring as Camden only hit one from the field, a 3-point shot by Kendrell Salmond. Westwood had four baskets, two by Kayla Atkins and one each from Aubria Myers and Jai Lykes. The fourth period would be the best for Camden in terms of putting points on the board. They would sink seven baskets and three free throws for 18 points in the period.

Westwood didn’t sit idly by, however, scoring 17 points of their own, many of which were free throws. Anah Livingston scored two baskets, with Toney, Atkins and Lykes adding one each. Toney was the high scorer for Westwood with 17 points.

Westwood moves to 6-9 on the year. The Redhawks are back home Friday to face the Diamond Hornets of Lower Richland High School at 6 p.m.
